Baseball and Steroids- The Controversy

There has been a lot of controversy about steroids in baseball.
Does it enhance performance and what are the side effects. Are
records today the result of steroids. And are athletes harming
themselves.

First of all, we need to understand what is a steroid. And why do players use it. Anabolic steroids are a synthetic version of the male hormone testosterone. Testosterone in it's normal state promotes and boosts muscle development and growth. When it is supplemented with steroids, you have an increase of muscle mass, reduction of body fat, and enhanced endurance. It is used by athletes to try to have the edge on the competition. It is believed that by using a steroid in baseball it will cause you to hit the ball further. And longer.

What are some of the side effects? They range from psychologically to physically. From a psychological standpoint, they can range from a feeling of well-being to depression. Mood swings. And even rage. Sometimes called 'roid rage'. Other adverse psychological effects can include intense aggression and violence.

From a physical standpoint, you can have all kinds of changes. You will have increased muscle mass and increased endurance, but the side effects can include a plethora of problems. The worst being liver damage, and cancer. You can have acne, excessive hair growth or loss. Testicular atrophy (shrinking), etc.

What is the reward vs. risk? The reward being a quick avenue for increased muscle mass, increased performance, and increased endurance. A feeling of invincibility. The risk is permanent physical morbidity and psychotic episodes that include aggression, violence, and rapid mood swings. Also feelings of depression and suicide. Is the reward worth it? Absolutely not! Yet it is abused by athletes today for the quick gain of fortune and fame. It is believed that by using a steroid in baseball it will lead you down the path of fortune and fame.

There has been a lot of controversy whether Mark McGwire or Barry Bonds or Gary Sheffield and others have used a steroid in baseball. There is the infamous BALCO incident where there are accusations that Barry's long time friend Greg Anderson was supplying Barry with an untrackable steroid, sometimes called "the cream" or "the clear". Which raised a lot of questions in the baseball world. Did they use a steroid in baseball and is there proof it enhanced their game? We can draw several conclusions from this.

First off, is there any proof that a steroid in baseball has enhanced the record book with unfair records. At this time, no. We have to remember a couple of things before trying to point fingers, etc. Barry Bonds went on to have an unbelievable season setting a single season record of home runs that will probably never be surpassed in my mind. This happened from a guy that usually averaged around 35 homers a season. Can you explain the sudden jump in home runs? Probably not. But you can make the assumption that he has matured to the top of his game and that he had a dream season.

Now, let's look at Roger Maris. When Roger went on to hit 61 home runs from a guy that usually never hit that many. Did everyone in the world suddenly start saying there must be a steroid in baseball that he is using? Or he must be doing something to enhance his game. No they did not. They assumed that he just had a magical season that only comes around ever so often. Can we draw the same conclusions about Barry, and about Mark? Yes, we can. Could it be that they had magical seasons? Absolutely.

Until the evidence comes out, we don't know what any athlete is doing. What I do know as a former major leaguer is how difficult it is to perform at such a high level day in and day out. In my mind, whether they are doing steroids or not, you still have to hit the ball over the fence. You still have to make solid contact consistently. You still have to have great fundamentals. I think what has happened on the baseball field has been remarkable and we are lucky to be able to witness such great athletes perform daily.

Steroids in my mind take away from the game. Even though they provide a quick explosion of muscle mass and endurance, over the long run, they will harm you. They will cause psychotic events, and physical damage that will last a life time. The bottom line is simple. Play the game the way it is meant to be played. Play with honor and pride and dignity. And above all, leave steroids out of it.Using a steroid in baseball is simply not worth it.

Surgery To Take Out Wisdom Teeth - Post Operative Care

Veteran Benefits - Aid and Attendance

The basics of an oft-misunderstood VA pension benefit that is available for veterans and their widowed surviving spouses.

Wartime veterans and their surviving spouse with limited incomes, who are totally and  permanently disabled for reasons not traceable to their service, may be eligible to receive compensation under the NSC (non-service connected) VA disability program. There are two disability programs available through the VA that pays monthly benefits to  disabled veterans. They are:

1.      Disability Compensation (service related disabilities)

2.      Disability Pension (non-service related disabilities)

This article will focus on the Disability Pension. Under this Pension there are three pension benefit levels. They are:

1.      Disabled Veteran unable to work

2.      Housebound disabled veteran or surviving spouse

3.      Disabled Veteran or surviving spouse who needs aid & attendance care

Let's focus and drill down more on the Aid and Attendance Pension Benefit Provision.

Most VSO (Veterans Service Organizations) and VCO (Veterans Commission Offices) provide very little information on the aid & attendance provision of the disability pension. This lack of communication along with the large government bureaucracy and run-around most veterans or surviving spouses experience when dealing with the VA has led to many eligible individuals to not fully receive the benefits they earned and are entitled.

This benefit provided by the Veteran's Administration (VA) is the "Improved Pension Disability Pension with Aid and Attendance entitlement" but often called just the Aid and Attendance VA Benefit. 

It is available to certain wartime veterans who are totally disabled because of a non-service connected condition; who are in financial need; and who need the aid and attendance of another person in order to avoid the hazards of the daily environment.   

This Improved Pension program allows for Veterans who require the regular attendance of another person to assist in eating, bathing, dressing, undressing or taking care of the needs of nature to receive financial benefits paid to them monthly.   

An improved pension benefit is also available for the surviving spouse of the wartime veteran.  The spouse is only eligible for this VA financial assistance when he or she is a widow and has not remarried.  This improved pension is called the "Improved Death Pension Benefit with Aid and Attendance entitlement."  The eligibility requirements are identical but the monthly benefit is a lower dollar amount.  

Applying for the pension benefit is not difficult. 

It requires you to complete a long application and provide documentation.  The VA is picky on how the documentation looks and what it states.  Of particular confusion is the medical documentation.  The VA has three different medical forms and none of them are doctor friendly.  

The real difficulty with applying for the VA disability pension benefit is understanding what the VA really wants, in what format and when.  Add to that the really confusing multiple letters you will get during the claim processing.  

Here is an example.  You send in everything that is required in the right format and on the right forms.  You then receive a letter from the VA that lists that they need this huge list of information and documents to support the claim and to further process the application.   It is not until the 4th or 5th page of this letter that you see a small list of items they have received with your claim application. 

Confused?  You bet. 

Do you still need to send in additional information?  Was what you sent them okay, or do they want more?   

To add to the confusion there is this form called the "VCAA Notice Response" and it has only two boxes to check. One box asks if you want an additional 60 days to send in supporting information.  The other box says they will adjudicate your claim immediately because you don't want to send in any more supporting information.  

What to do?  Panic and self-doubt sets in.  Nothing in the letter tells you what to do.  It sounds like they want more information.  Why did they send all these additional forms to fill out? 

Should you sign this form that wants you to Authorize Release of Medical Information?  You sent in the doctor's evaluation with the original application, wasn't that good enough?  

The vast majority of people wish they knew how to respond and understand these confusing letters from the VA. 

Why do they make it so hard to get this financial assistance? 

Hundreds of people have turned to an Aid and Attendance Handbook from Veterans Care Advisors to get these answers, and more.   Understanding what the VA wants when you apply for the Aid and Attendance (just one of the little-known veteran benefits) can make the difference between a faster approval or even getting approved.

Be Prepared - Your Child's Initial PPT Meeting - Special Education

Many parents have an extra responsibility when it comes to their children's education. Every year these parents attend their child's Planning and Placement Team meeting. Any child with a designation within the special education spectrum has one of these meetings every year. These designations include learning and intellectual disabilities, emotional disturbance, autism, other health impairments (ADD/ADHD, etc) and many others. Attending these meetings can be daunting and intimidating to non-educational members of the team. It doesn't have to be though. If a parent is prepared for the meeting and knows the 'drill' it should be much less difficult.

Annual PPT's are held every year at the same time. Legally there must be a meeting every year within 365 days and a triennial every 3 years. The triennial is a meeting to determine if a child is still eligible for special education. I am jumping ahead here a little, let's start at the beginning.

If your child has never had a special education designation, a member of the school community, yourself or your doctor may suggest that your child is tested to determine if he or she needs extra support. Sometimes it is obvious (your child may have autism, down's syndrome, or a physical disability) and other times additional testing needs to be completed to determine eligibility.

The first step is for you or school personnel to start the process. If you initiate the process (through a written letter - example to be shown) the school must hold an initial meeting called a Planning and Placement Team (PPT) meeting. At this meeting a number of individuals may be present. This will include a building administrator, special education teacher, a regular education teacher, the school psychologist, guidance counselor, school nurse, transition coordinator and anyone else deemed necessary. Your child's strengths and weaknesses will be discussed and you will be asked for your input and what your concerns are. You must also sign a permission to test form. Withholding permission will stop the process. The school district may determine that legal mediation is necessary at this time. A multi-disciplinary will be conducted to determine eligibility and must be completed within 45 of the initiation of services. Therefore, a full evaluation must be completed from the date the school receives your letter (or is internally referred by school personnel) within 45 school days. Weekends and vacations do not count. At the 2nd meeting it will be determined whether or not your child qualifies for special education services. For placement in special education, you must give your written consent. This can be withdrawn but you should seek the advice of an educational lawyer or advocate if you plan to do this. If it is determined that your child does not qualify for special education services, ask about a qualification under a 504 designation. You can disagree with any of the decisions made and have it noted in the Individual Education Plan (IEP). The IEP is the map that school personnel will use to guide them in servicing your child's educational needs. You also have the option of disputing your position through the courts. The school district I work in tries to work with parents and avoid this altogether. If you win your case, the school district must pay your legal bills. It is suggested that you bring another individual with you (spouse, friend, pastor) for positive support. You should write down the concerns you have: strengths, what your child needs the most help with, goals that you want your child to succeed. If you child will be transitioning from high school to college or the world of work, a transition plan must be developed as well. Be prepared to discuss what you see for your child. Your teen will also be at this meeting (starts attending around 8th grade) and be asked what their interests and dreams are. You can help him or her in discussing this beforehand. Standardized testing will be discussed and it will be determined whether your child needs extra time, special setting or a reader (or any other number of accommodations). A modification page will be in the Individual Education Plan; you should ask for a copy of this page and make suggestions that you think are necessary for your child to succeed without enabling him/her. The number of hours your child will be serviced by special education personnel, counseling staff, etc. will be determined. Goals and objectives will be written for any areas that your child needs additional help in. This can include reading, math, writing, general academics, behavior, self-help skills, communication and other areas as necessary. Make sure to ask questions if you have them and get the name and number of at least one member of the team that you can talk to if you have any concerns or questions about your child, the IEP or PPT meeting. IEP's generally go into effect 5 days after the meeting or sooner if agreed to by the team. The school is obligated to get you a copy of the IEP within 5 days of the PPT meeting. Any questions you have (or disagreements with the plan) should be directed to a member of the team (usually a special education teacher or administrator). Relax, relax, relax. The more often you attend PPT's the more comfortable and knowledgeable you will become.

Camphor Blocks and Their Healing Properties

Camphor blocks have been used for their natural therapeutic properties for years, and for many have even become a symbol of their grandmother's old fashioned remedies. Camphor has many faithful followers and they swear blind by its wonderful healing powers and always keep some to hand, for a whole range of purposes.

Camphor originally comes from a tree native to Japan and China and is one the main ingredients in tiger balm. If you have ever used tiger balm, you'll know how potent and pungent camphor can be! It can also be found in aromatherapy oil form, where it can be used as part of a massage oil or even for burning.

One of the most popular uses for camphor blocks is in helping to sooth chest complaints. Back to grandma's remedies, it was common for children to wear it hanging around their neck at chest level to ward of any coughs and cold that were around. If you were unfortunate enough to get ill, it could be used in the same way to help clear any congestion on the chest.

Another way to clear the chest is wrap it in a pillow case, a stocking or in muslin and place in the bed beneath the sheets. Again, making sure that the camphor block is wrapped up to avoid direct contact with the skin, it can also be used to great affect to ease aches and pains in the joints. But what about using camphor blocks for more spiritual purposes? There are many uses here and it is excellent for blowing away the cobwebs and giving your soul a bit of a spring clean! If you perform spells, rituals or prayers then you can grate camphor blocks and burn them over a charcoal block. This is a very cleansing and purifying process.

For calming down your spirits, if you are feeling very stressed or your nerves are 'jangly', place the camphor blocks in the four corners of your room. You will then be literally surrounded with it's influence and energies and will effortlessly absorb it's powers.

Camphor blocks have also been associated with psychic and prophetic dreams. You can use the burning method or the placing 4 blocks in your room as you sleep method but if you would like to foretell what is to happen in your life, try concentrating on what you wish to know or the questions you seek answers to before you drift off to sleep. 7. Believe in your people. The majority of people want to do well - very few individuals approach a job with the intent of screwing up. Yet, many managers run their business thinking that employees must be treated with a "watchdog" mentality. They install hidden cameras, monitor email, and set up procedures that require employees to get multiple approval signatures for decisions.

Vibrational Healing

As Albert Einstein once observed, "Nothing happens until something moves", that is, that everything vibrates to a particular measurable frequency. The smallest known quantity is the atom. The atom consists of a neutron, and nucleus, encircled by electrons and protons. Each of these composites of the atom is vibrating and moving. Every thing consists of atoms and each of these atoms is vibrating which in turn provides the vibration of the object. Scientists say that rocks vibrate, but they're vibrating so slowly that they appear as solids. When you speed up the vibrations, the rock turns into a liquid. Speeding up the liquid's vibration eventually changes the liquid to gas. The molecules are just moving or vibrating at a different frequency.
